Orquesta Filarmónica Juvenil de Bogotá

The Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá (Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota –OFB) was established in 1967. Thanks to the joint work of Raul Garcia and Mario Posada, who had embarked on a series of representations before the district government, in order to link the orchestra to the administrative machinery of Bogota.

Through the agreement 71 of 1967, the Council of Bogota welcomed the Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation and gave life to the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota, grouping which shortly afterwards became cultural heritage of the city with a clear objective: to democratize the musical culture, bringing it to universities, schools, popular theatres, etc. In addition, to seek opportunities for young teachers of Chamber music, the direction and the dissemination of symphonic music.

On August 19th 1968, the first concert which made visible the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota was held, under the leadership of the director Melvin Strauss at the Teatro Colon.

The OFB is one of the few orchestras in Latin America that has done, almost in its entirety, the cycles of composers such as Mahler and Bruckner and Bartok. Thanks to its programming, Bogota has known the work of composers such as Stravinsky, Debussy, Poulenc, Orff, Pinzón Urrea, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, among others. Additionally, it has developed activities such as live concerts, radio and television programs, educational programs, competitions for young musicians, several phonographic productions and audiovisual material. It has a bank of scores that provides services to the music at the national level and has a depository video library with concerts recorded and issued in more than thirty years of activity. The Philharmonic, pride of Bogotá and the country, is currently formed by 96 musicians under the tutelage of Ligia Amadio.

For the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota is a primary objective to provide a rich cultural offer encompassing the needs and spaces in the city. Between 2013 and 2014, the OFB has developed new strategies, working hand in hand with the local administration, which have helped to create 6 new groupings. These groups intend to generate social changes by approaching symphonic music to the citizens, empowering a new generation of young actors who engage with art, social development and the city.

The Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is formed by 40 young performers between 18 and 26 years, originating from several regions of Colombia who, under the tutelage of the maestro Carlos Villa, have the possibility to complement their training through the practice of an instrument in a symphonic group format with professional characteristics and requirements.
