BETO JAMAICA REY VALLENATO

On 30 April 2006 Alberto 'Beto' Jamaica was crowned Professional King of the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata (Festival of the vallenato legend); that night "Valledupar", world capital of vallenato, enjoyed his professional performance and his execution of the four musical airs, which got the ovation of the audience. The crowd loudly cheered the "Guy from Bogotá", who despite not being born on the Caribbean coast, captivated the audience with his master to play the accordion.

The crowning of Alberto Jamaica as Professional King, split the history of the Festival Vallenato as it was the first time a 'cachaco' (person born in the interior) made the hearts of the jury and the press stop, as the delirious crowd applauded him, acknowledging him as a faithful exponent of the classic vallenato, a genre that has been overshadowed by modernism.

'Beto' Jamaica began playing guitar, caja and guacharaca, and has been playing the accordion for more than 24 years. He has participated in more than 55 record productions with well-known groups such as Los Tupamaros, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogotá, Los Alpha 8, Taxi Orquesta, Grupo Guayaba and Luna Verde. He has been a member of several vallenato groups such as Jairo Serrano, Pablo Atuesta, Penchy Castro, Alberto Fernández and Otto Serge. He has recorded more than 200 radio and television commercials. As a participant in festivals he got resounding triumphs in regions like Cundinamarca (Madrid, Bogotá, Ubaté) and Boyacá (Quipama and Nobsa).

Before being crowned Vallenato king he fought 13 consecutive years, winning in 2006 thanks to a perfect fingering of the instrument. "This “cachaco” will someday win the festival," people said constantly and, indeed, the prophecy was fulfilled.

In 1996 he was guest of honor to Hungary by the Ambassador. He has performed in Ecuador, Chile, Costa Rica, United States (New York, Chicago, Corpus Christi), Canada and Paraguay. He is currently promoting his latest album titled “REY DE MI FOLCLOR” (King of my folklore), pressed by CODISCOS for Colombia. Several of the songs have been released by radio stations and the puya "El Gallito blanco", from author Gustavo Rangel, has been wide spread inside and outside Colombia.

The famous group of King Vallenato 'Beto' Jamaica, is formed by 12 professional artists: leading voice, caja, guacharaca, bass, drums, congas, guitar, keyboard, two backup singers and an official presenter on stage. The group plays successful songs from well-known artists of the vallenato music folklore. On stage, 'Beto' Jamaica makes a spectacular show with caja, guacharaca and accordion, interpreting the four traditional airs of vallenato folklore: paseo, son, merengue, and puya.
